Why Engineering?

"Engineers have a collective responsibility to improve the lives of people around the world." Every year, the world produces a million engineering graduates and the number has steadily increased in the last decade. India alone has 3345 dedicated Engineering Colleges - the rapid growth of which can be attributed to our ecosystem. Close to 1.5 million engineers from India graduate every year, which is more than the total number of engineers produced by China and USA combined together!
But naturally, the question that comes to our mind is do we need so many engineers? “YES”. The world needs plenty of "well-equipped, talented engineering graduates with the right attitude and innovative minds, since we need skills today which were not even imagined ten years ago. According to United Nations, "The next two decades will see an addition of two billion people who will create an extraordinary demand-for energy, to telecommunication, and infrastructure. The role of engineers will be critical in fulfilling those demands at various scales."
Now, are we ready with these type engineers? The answer is NO.

Challenges in Engineering Education

Despite the growing number of engineers, there is a paucity of critical thinkers who are readily employable. And several reasons continue to contribute to this growing gap between quality and quantity

  • Mismatched Career Choices - Students opt for a technical degree due to peer or parental pressure and the lucrative opportunities it offers and often find that they lack in aptitude and the demand that industry needs
  • Engineers are not learning how to "DO" engineering- Despite the many advancement in science, the technical education standards are slipping due to lack of focus on application oriented education
  • Limitations of standard education- Teaching methodology is reaching its limits.as the importance is on the right answer. How the student arrived to that right or wrong answer, and its learning obstacles are continued to be ignored. The learning process is score sheet dependent and student disengagement occurs when a student lags behind
  • Pressure on the student to deliver- With more and more students going in for campus placements post the degree, Institutions are taking the quantitative approach in their academic processes
  • Lack of Industry Exposure- Regular updating of the curriculum to match the rapid changes in science and technology has not happened at the desired pace and lack of adequate interfaces with the industry through internships is a concept, that is still at its nascent stages which has greatly impacted engineering literacy.

Mobile learning & Engineers

"We need to move from sage to stage and guide to the side." The time has come to empower students by showing them the sheer breadth of ways engineering can be applied in the real world. How can an educational institution do that? With “Information Technology”, of course.

In this age of instant answers, technology is a powerful reality. And they have the potential to be the means of positive end. The indispensable, rapidly developing, empowering mobile tool contains the essence of teaching and learning through exploration and discovery.

A recent study by Harvard Business Journal revealed that the average millennial interacts with a mobile is 150x/day, making it a very powerful tool to enable learning experiences. Wherever one looks there is evidence of mobile penetration across demographic offering an opportunity for education.

And this instant access is fast changing the studying habits of students. The modules are available on mobile devices on Android and soon in iOS, and Windows and can be used offline after the initial download. A web version is also made available.
